Lots O’ Necklace For Fall

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Like it or not, big chunky jewelry (namely necklaces and chokers) are IN for Fall.

Personally, I tend to feel like these chokers are about to come alive, grow limbs, and start swatting the pretty girl in the face.  That’s honestly what I think about when I see a woman walking down the street with a necklace on that looks as though she needed the assistance of a man… with a forklift… to put it on and clasp it.  But that’s just me.  I’ll accept the trend like a good little penguin and keep my mouth somewhat shut to any designer friends who may be jumping on the chunka-chunka choochoo train with their accessories this season, as long as they stay away from too much gold.  Girls, realize that you can stay on trend here without “icing” out your collarbone until your friends feel the need to give you a rapper name and you join the likes of ‘Lil Romeo’ or ‘Weezy’.  Or until you’re forced to buy a cargo van and start the next A-Team, Mr. T.  Go easy at first and see what’s comfortable for you… and start with browns, earth tones, and soft colors – not metallics.  Also, keep your size and shape in mind.  We don’t want any of you 5′1″, 98 pound, tiny tots developing back problems because of a Fall 2009 fashion trend.  If that should happen – send your chiropractor bills to Sandra Bullock, she wore just under 1 ton of necklace to the premiere of ‘The Proposal’ and got people buzzing early on.

Does Usher carry a gun?

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

One time, my girlfriend and I were in the tie department of Barneys New York in NYC… and we hear the guy standing at the counter next to us start humming and singing quietly to himself.  Dude’s voice was INCREDIBLE,  so we both look his way… he flashes a big smile.  It was Usher.   Since that day I love him, love everything about him, thinking of being him for Halloween…. BUT…. does he really carry a gun?

Usher carries a gun?

Usher carries a gun?

Before you guys hit me with a barrage of emails about how the piece he’s wearing may or may not be a travel wallet/suspenders type of thing and not a gun holster… I am aware of that possibility.  Even though Usher’s strapped, leather holster appears to be the same one Doc Hollywood wore in Tombstone, I’ll admit that I cannot tell for certain from this picture whether it is actually a glorified coin purse.  Either way, he looks like he’s starring in a new urban action/musical, Hip Hop Cop.  Glad this shot was taken for Vegas Magazine and is not candid.

Cher Horowitz is a designer

Alicia Silverstone is most famous for playing a Beverly Hills high-schooler with no license, no real worries, and no clue, in the 1995 pop-culture phenomenom film, Clueless.  Today she’s taking on a different role, teaming up with environmentally-conscious beauty line EcoTools to design a line of earth-friendly beauty supplies, cases, and bags.  You know I’ve taken my clear stance in the past about the new trend of makeshift celebrity “designers”, but I think Cher’s stab at it is different.  Now she might disagree with this, but in recent years Alicia has become more known for her efforts and activism with the environment and eco causes than she is for her acting roles.  She posed nude for PETA in 2007 after winner the “Sexiest Female Vegitarian” award.  She lives in an eco-friendly home. She drives a hybrid car.  She does interviews where she slips in things people can do to help the environment, like reusing water bottles.  And she’s constantly doing invornmental charity work.  Point is – when it comes to environmental concerns, Alicia Silverstone has been walking the walk for quite awhile.

In my mind, the fact that her foray into the role of designer is entirely based on her eco concerns… makes it a-ok!  Don’t worry, no fun-making from this penguin, Alicia.  The line of beauty supply products will be 100% natural and non-toxic, and the bags will be made entirely of hemp with linings from recycled materials.  The keystone item will be a five-piece brush set with bag, but the line will also feature a cosmetic bag, a cosmetics brush bag, a train case, and an overnight bag.  The hemp bags are printed with a floral pattern of Alicia’s favorite flowers: rose, lavender, chrysanthemum, thyme, and cosmo.

The line is set to hit stores just in time for this holiday season.

Weejuns? you ask…

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Sorry, I just couldn’t resist.  Yesterday I glorified that Italian man in Florence for his stellar ensemble complete with the Weejun loafers.   I claimed that kids across the country would soon be raiding granddad’s closet like a masked Jesse James to get their hands on some original Bass pennies… and this morning I learn about this:

Mark McNairy collaborates with Bass

Mark McNairy collaborates with Bass

American fashion designer Mark McNairy who’s most well known for his creative direction at the traditional blue blood clothing company J. Press, has teamed up with Bass on this line of Weejun loafers.  J. Press is the quintessential east coast brand and has been dressing presidents, businessmen, and socialites since Teddy Roosevelt was carrying his big stick.  Founded in 1902, the J. Press style has come to be termed “Ivy League” and it caters to the waspy and proud, deliberately keeping its stuffy shop locations in  New Haven; Cambridge, Mass.; New York; and Washington.

The J.Press Look

The J.Press Look

Characterized by staples like plaid blazers and fluffy cream v-neck sweaters, the fits, fabrics, and suggested tailoring (an almost demanded 1 3/4″ break in the pant leg hem) have stayed virtually unchanged since the early days.  However, Mark’s design perspective for the J.Press line has taken the brand out of the way-too-stuffy category and placed it in the acceptable and kitschy area.  So, it’s no surprise that he was approached by Bass to put together this new line of Weejun loafers just as the craze is about to tip [says me].  The collection, due out in Fall 2010, includes the classic tassled styles and alligator (which could hurt at $3675), but it also shows some serious flair and departure for the normally subdued McNairy.  A lack of adherence to Ivy League guidelines agrees with him as he drops styles in royal blue suede with oversized white leather tassles… and classic construction pieces made out of a uneven toned,  stamped leather.

While I still think this trend is about to tip along more standard, classic style lines (for both men and women by the way), a glimpse at this collaboration shows me where Weejuns will go in the next few years.  We will undoubtedly see a crossover and expansion in colors, materials, and structure, much like the Sperry top-siders development… and I can assure you that grandpa doesn’t have those kinds of shoes stashed away in his closet.

Business or Pleasure?

Business or pleasure?… These wooden business card holders by Japanese designer Masakage Tanno prove that at least one thing can be both.

Made from both Japanese Oak and Padouk, each case is hand-crafted in Tanno’s wood shop work studio, MIYABI.  The craftsmanship on these in unbelievable, with small hinges and detailings made from Kurogaki wood (Japanese Persimmon), and a small interior magnet embedded for the case’s closure.

The concepts clean, natural, mid-century modern feel is unique in the world of business card holders and the quality is unsurpassed.  You can see the gorgeous finishing from afar, and the attention to detail is impeccable up close.  The only place I’ve found to purchase these little wooden bits of magic is Merchant No.4, an online store for unique design objects.  I don’t know about you, but I’m dying to have one of these in my pocket… every interaction would end with me pulling a card and saying “it was a pleasure doing business with you…”.  They wouldn’t forget where THAT card came from!

Dress to match your perfume.

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Is it possible to dress to match a scent? The scent of your perfume to be exact.  Well at the release event, Faith Hill’s stylist managed for her to match the look of her new perfume, ‘Faith Hill Parfums’ (call the CLIO judges now for that creative name).

Faith Hill Parfums

I realize the tone in which I’m writing this sounds as thought I’m making fun of her for using the glass bottle of romance juice as a fashion muse… but on the contrary, I actually love the look here.  Her fair complexion and softer features work well with the light pink color of the dress.  The reflective satin or silk material is complimented by her now blond again hair (this wouldn’t be nearly as striking if she were still brunette) and her huge white smile.  I’m glad she wore the jewelry to put some girly charm into a neckline that is otherwise masculine, in cut and collar.

As for the matchy matchy with the eau de toilette, with which she no doubt posed for pictures all night… I think she could have gone over the top and had a great time with it.  The black labeling on the perfume and black ribbon could have influenced her to do a dark hat, or at least a headband or ribbon in her hair.  Maybe a black sash waistband/belt around the high-waisted dress? With the glamor and old world grace of perfume marketing in general, I think playing it up in an Audrey Hepburn sort of way could have suited her well.  Here, you be the judge…

Better? OR Worse? What do you think?
